Heat and flames - ISO 11612:2015
Personal protective equipment
Clothing to protect against heat and flames
This standard aims to provide clothing that protects against small flames, molten metal splashes and various heat sources.
There are three performance levels for the multiple risks listed in this standard:
- Level 1 for low risk exposure
- Level 2 for average risk exposure
- Level 3 for high risk exposure
There is a fourth protection level to protect against extreme exposure to radiant heat.
Classification and performance levels:
Code | Requirements | Performance level |
A1 | Limited spread of flames – surface ignition | Mandatory |
A2 | Limited spread of flames – edge ignition | A2 |
B | Protection against convective heat | B1-B3 |
C | Protection against radiant heat | C1-C4 |
D | Protection against molten aluminium splashes | D1-D3 |
E | Protection against molten iron splashes | E1-E3 |
F | Protection against contact heat | F1-F3 |
Please note:
Dirt, sweat, water and other contaminants will reduce protective performance.
A single-layer garment provides sufficient protection for most industry jobs. The most common levels are A1, B1 and C1.
