Heat and flames - ISO 11612:2015

Personal protective equipment

Clothing to protect against heat and flames

This standard aims to provide clothing that protects against small flames, molten metal splashes and various heat sources.

There are three performance levels for the multiple risks listed in this standard:

  • Level 1 for low risk exposure
  • Level 2 for average risk exposure
  • Level 3 for high risk exposure

There is a fourth protection level to protect against extreme exposure to radiant heat.

Classification and performance levels:

Code  Requirements  Performance level
A1  Limited spread of flames – surface ignition   Mandatory
A2  Limited spread of flames – edge ignition  A2
Protection against convective heat  B1-B3
Protection against radiant heat  C1-C4
Protection against molten aluminium splashes  D1-D3
Protection against molten iron splashes  E1-E3
Protection against contact heat  F1-F3

Please note:
Dirt, sweat, water and other contaminants will reduce protective performance.

A single-layer garment provides sufficient protection for most industry jobs. The most common levels are A1, B1 and C1.
