European Circular Fashion Awards
Established in 2020, the successful European Circular Fashion Awards recognises companies in the fashion and textile industry who are reducing the impact of their activities on the environment and on society.
This year is the second staging of the awards and includes partners ADEME (Agence de la Transition Écologique — the French Environment and Energy Management Agency), the Hauts-de-France region and the Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai Eurometropolis.
This competition is open to companies and designers in France, Belgium and the Netherlands who are working to reduce the fashion and textile industry's environmental impact.
The call for applications for the second edition of these awards opened on 9 May and 201 applications were submitted. The projects compete for seven trophies and "coups de cœur" ["favourites"] that vary depending on the project's maturity: the Hope Trophy, the Booster Trophy and the Honorary Trophy. The prizes include a Grand Prize voted for by the public and regional "coups de cœur".
Elis Workwear to Workwear — recycling old workwear
At Elis, we have a circular business model. We maintain our rentable products and our clothes are designed and made to last.
We are constantly looking for ways to relieve pressure on natural resources by repairing, reusing or recycling our products.
Our goal is to progress towards becoming part of a circular textile sector by anticipating requirements at all stages of creation and production.
- Our designers are working on eco-designed collections, which aim to limit energy consumption during production and which allow end-of-life clothes to be easily repaired, upcycled or recycled.
- We are increasingly using more responsible materials to reduce the environmental impact of our clothes, and we are working with our suppliers to minimise fabric waste at source during production.
Our "zero waste" apron perfectly demonstrates our project's ethos: not only does its specific pattern mean that not a single piece of fabric is thrown away during production, but it is also made with 100% recycled fabric!
For this project, we are working in partnership with fibre manufacturers to experiment in how we can recycle used clothing into new clothing. During this recycling process, several important steps are required to produce a new fabric of satisfactory quality to make new, hard-wearing clothing for the workplace.
This is why we began our project in March 2021: sorting end-of-life clothes on pilot sites, meeting and setting up a partnership with one of our garment pickers who strips the clothes (of snap fasteners, zips, chips, labels etc.) then sends them to a partner who defibres the leftover garments to make them into yarn.
We are now able to obtain a quality yarn that is used to make fabric in different weights. It is this fabric that we have used to make our "zero waste" apron!
