The rat has mainly nocturnal activity and nests in burrows. It has highly developed hearing and poor sight; it relies on touch to guide itself. A jumper and an excellent swimmer, it can move on long distances; however, it is a very bad climber. It has an omnivorous diet and drinks a 10th of its weight.
