Wasps and hornets: solutions to get rid of them

The risks

For each manager hosting public, an invasion of wasps and hornets can harm its branding and induce a bad experience to its clients.

General information

Wasps and hornets belong to the Hymenoptera family, which gather over 130 000 species around the globe. Including the hunting wasp, the solitary wasp, the social wasp, the Asian hornet (Vespa Velutina) who becomes aggressive when we approach its nest, as well as the European hornet (Vespa Crabro).

The wasps are constantly looking for food sources, and the more we approach the end of the season, the more aggressive they become to insure their survival. They do not hesitate to sting whenever they feel threatened, and unlike bees, they can sting multiple times. The symptoms to the sting can differ depending on the person stinged, it can go from a moderate pain lasting only a couple of hours, to severe allergic reaction which can be lethal, even more so if place in the throat (angioedema).

Contrary to popular beliefs, the sting of the European hornet (Vespa Crabro) is no more nor less painful or dangerous that the one from the wasp. However, symptoms can still be threatening depending on the sensitivity of the person stinged. Nevertheless, even if the European Hornet is no more aggressive than the wasp, its Asian counterpart ( Vespa Velutina) represent a real danger for human and the ecosystem balance. The Asian hornet will attack bees and can manage to destroy an entire hive with the help of only a few of its relatives.

These insects are very present in spring, but also in autumn because the queen starts to lay young larvae and new queens and males appear in the colony. They are the ones who will ensure the foundation of new colonies the following year! Therefore, it is necessary to get rid of nests and swarms.

Controlling wasps and hornets

It is necessary to get rid of these pests to protect customers (from wasp stings) in public places or establishments, or fruit harvests which may become impossible in their presence.

If you notice an increased and abnormal number of these wasps and hornets, it means that their nests are not far from the premises.
